The vision of the City of Johannesburg


Johannesburg has a vision of becoming an African world-class city defined by increased prosperity and quality of life through sustained economic growth for all of its citizens. The particular economic and social goals of the city area:

  • Improved safety and security
  • Improving life expectancy and health of the population
  • A literate, educated and skilled population with a strong entrepreneurial base
  • Strong and sustainable economic growth
  • Strong and sustainable growth in employment
  • Increasing prosperity through higher quality jobs and better distribution of wealth (incomes and assets)
  • Reducing levels of poverty and increasing personal and household incomes
  • Improving levels of environmental quality and sustainability
  • Deepening of democracy through:
  • Higher rates of civic participation
  • Responsive, people-centred governance, and
  • efficient and effective administration and service delivery.
The vision defined in this section is derived from Council statements, findings of the iGoli 2010 Customer Needs Survey and the iGoli 2010 Visioning Process.
